Story map

12 chapters, one picture each

  1. Chapter 1

    Down the Rabbit-Hole

Bored on a riverbank, Alice chases a white rabbit who checks a pocket watch and frets that he is late. She tumbles down a very long hole into a hall of locked doors.

  2. Chapter 2

    The Pool of Tears

A drink and a cake make Alice grow enormous, then shrink again. She ends up swimming in the pool of tears she cried while she was giant-sized.

  3. Chapter 3

    A Caucus-Race and a Long Tale

Soaked birds and animals crawl ashore and run a race with no rules in which everyone wins. Alice hands out sweets as prizes, then scares them all off by talking about her cat.

  4. Chapter 4

The Rabbit Sends in a Little Bill

Mistaken for the Rabbit's maid, Alice is sent to his house, drinks from a bottle and grows until she fills it. A lizard comes down the chimney and is sent flying straight back out.

  5. Chapter 5

    Advice from a Caterpillar

A caterpillar on a mushroom keeps asking Alice who she is. He tells her one side of the mushroom will make her grow and the other will make her shrink.

  6. Chapter 6

    Pig and Pepper

In a kitchen thick with pepper, a Duchess shakes a howling baby and tosses it to Alice. Outside it turns into a pig, and a grinning cat in a tree slowly fades away.

  7. Chapter 7

    A Mad Tea-Party

At a long table set for many, a hatter, a hare and a sleepy dormouse talk in riddles and keep moving seats. For them it is always teatime.

  8. Chapter 8

    The Queen's Croquet-Ground

Card gardeners paint white roses red before the Queen arrives shouting for heads. The croquet uses flamingos for mallets and hedgehogs for balls, and nobody follows any rules.

  9. Chapter 9

    The Mock Turtle's Story

The Queen sends Alice with a Gryphon to meet a weeping Mock Turtle. Between sighs he describes the odd lessons he took at school under the sea.

  10. Chapter 10

    The Lobster Quadrille

The Gryphon and the Mock Turtle show Alice a dance done with lobsters at the seashore and sing a mournful song about soup. Then a cry goes up that the trial is starting.

  11. Chapter 11

    Who Stole the Tarts?

In a crowded courtroom the King sits as judge, a jury of animals scribbles on slates, and the Knave is accused of stealing tarts. The witnesses only make things more confused.

  12. Chapter 12

    Alice's Evidence

Grown tall again, Alice refuses the Queen's order of sentence first and verdict afterwards. She calls the court nothing but a pack of cards, they fly up at her, and she wakes on the riverbank.
